COVID-19 and the Global Political Economy: Same as it Never Was?

This introductory article outlines how Global Political Economy and the nuanced perspectives of scholars from this interdiscipline navigate claims about origins consequences of, as well responses to, COVID-19 pandemic. Emerging social scientific assessments have tended to understand pandemic either an entirely novel crisis (“everything has changed”) or one merely extending preexisting economic political tensions (“nothing changed”). Early analyses political-economic aspects assembled in collection instead highlight both patterns continuity change—and importance situating changes within prepandemic continuities—that emerged during first year global brings together suggestions by for scholars, scientists more generally, further researching key dynamics shaping economy era it keeps unfolding evolving.
